Storm Kalafatas Obituary (1939 - 2024) - Easthampton, Massachusetts

Storm M. (Foley) Kalafatas, 84, of Easthampton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at CareOne in Northampton. She was born in Boston on December 4, 1939, to the late Maurice J. and Hester M. (Appleby) Foley. When she was young, she never liked her name, so she was known to all as ‘Chickie.’ When she turned 30, she decided to start using her given name, Storm, and also learned to drive a car—something that had not been necessary while living in Boston. Storm was educated in Boston schools, although she would be the first to admit that school was never one of her strong points. As a teen, Storm enjoyed roller skating, going to the skating rink with friends. She had skates with wooden wheels and was even able to perform ‘roller dances.’ Her high school yearbook ambition was to ‘marry a sailor,’ which she did in 1958 when she married Robert Ewing. They welcomed a daughter, Lynn, in 1961 before separating. She worked for several years at the Bank of Boston before retiring early. She then worked for a time at Woolworth’s in Jamaica Plain and at Boston Water & Sewer before fully retiring in 2001. Storm married Metrofanis (Metro) Kalafatas in 2000. They had dated in the 1960s before going their separate ways but reconnected in 1996 after more than 30 years. They were married on April 16, 2000. Their time together was cut way too short, as they celebrated only one year of marriage before Metro’s untimely passing in 2001. In 2003, Storm moved to West Palm Beach, FL. While there, she treated her family to a visit to Disney in Orlando. Feeling she was too far from family but not ready to move back to cold New England, she moved to Cincinnati, OH, in 2008, where she lived next door to her sister, Pat, and brother-in-law, Phil. Storm spent many hours at their house, painting with Pat on the front porch or enjoying dinner and game night. She returned to Massachusetts in 2016 to live closer to Lynn and her grandchildren. Storm also loved being a ‘cat mom’ over the years to Skeezicks, Mitzie, Belle, Remus, and Charlie. She enjoyed traveling when she could, visiting the UK several times to see relatives (her mother, Hester, having been born in South Wales), as well as visiting Hawaii and South Africa. Storm is survived by her loving daughter, Lynn (Ewing) Cocco, and her husband, Michael, of Northampton, along with her grandchildren, Bryan Cocco and his wife, Kaylin, of Norwalk, CT; Brittany Cocco of Raleigh, NC; and Michael “Mickey” Cocco and Nicholas Cocco of Northampton, as well as several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Metro Kalafatas; her sister, Patricia R. Kellard; her brother-in-law, Phillip J. Kellard of Cincinnati, OH; and her brothers, Gerald Foley and Brian (Rocky) Foley. Storm’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of CareOne and Hospice of Cooley Dickinson for the compassionate care she received. Storm will be remembered with a celebration of life at a private memorial. Donations can be made in Storm’s memory to the Dakin Humane Society.
