Michael P Mahitka Obituary (2026)

Michael P. Mahitka passed away unexpectedly on August 12, 2026, in Brimfield, MA, near his home. Michael was a cherished brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness, generosity, compassion, and laughter touched the lives of all who knew him. Born in Palmer, MA, on November 6, 1959, Michael was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth Mahitka and Ruth (Young) Buzzard. He is survived by his sister, Lynn (Mahitka) Mainville; his two nieces, Melissa Lachance and Kaitlyn Mainville; his girlfriend, Sharon McCaughey, her children, and eleven grandchildren; his step-sons, Ryan and Nate Murphy; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Cash, and his kitty, Sparky. Michael lived with his family in Monson, MA, until 1971, when they moved to Hawaii and settled in Makakilo on the island of O‘ahu. The family later lived in Gold Hill, Oregon, before returning to Palmer, MA, in 1976, where Michael graduated from high school. He proudly joined the United States Marine Corps in 1978 and served until 1982. Later, he continued his dedication to service through the American Legion in Monson, where he served as Commander at times and in other positions. Michael performed many charitable deeds for the Legion, especially enjoying cooking and serving meals to fellow veterans and their families. Throughout the years, Michael helped many people while working in Palmer—most recently at Main Street Tire and previously at Jackson’s Auto. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, bowling, traveling to the horse races in Saratoga, NY, and taking trips to Gloucester with Sharon and Cash. Michael will be remembered for his animated, funny stories; his love of cooking; and the joy he found in spending time with friends and family. His beloved cousin, Steven Mack, will deliver his eulogy at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Cemetery in Agawam. Services will be held on September 15th at 3 PM. No floral arrangements are permitted.
